Pear and Chocolate Crumbles

  • butter, for greasing
  • 2 x 410 g (13 oz) cans pear quarters in juice, drained
  • 50 g (2 oz) soft light brown sugar
  • grated rind and juice of 1 unwaxed lemon
  • 50 g (2 oz) milk chocolate chips or chunks
  • ice cream, to serve (optional)
  • 100 g (3 1/2 oz) plain flour
  • 50 g (2 oz) unsalted butter, diced
  • 50 g (2 oz) soft light brown sugar
  • 50 g (2 oz) milk chocolate chips or chunks
  • 50 g (2 oz) toasted hazelnuts, chopped
  • Grease 4 x 300 ml (1/2 pint) ovenproof dishes or ramekins and place on a baking sheet. Place the pears, sugar, lemon rind and juice and chocolate in a large bowl and stir together.
  • To make the topping, place the flour in a bowl, add the butter and rub in with the fingertips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Alternatively, use a food processor. Stir in the sugar, chocolate and hazelnuts.
  • Spoon the pear mixture into the prepared dishes or ramekins, spooning over any juice. Sprinkle over the topping and press down lightly.
  • Place in a preheated oven, 180°C (350ºF), Gas Mark 4, for 15 minutes or until golden and bubbling. Serve with spoonfuls of ice cream, if using.
