  • 2 lemons, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 125 g (4 oz) sugar
  • 8 whole cloves
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 150 ml (¼ pint) brandy

Place the slices of 1 lemon in a saucepan with the sliced orange, red wine, sugar, cloves and cinnamon sticks. Simmer gently for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat and add the brandy.

Serve the glühwein in small cups or heatproof glasses with the remaining slices of lemon.
