50 g (2 oz) butter, melted

Preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F), Gas Mark 6. Mix the apples and pears with the compote and transfer to an ovenproof dish.
Mix the ground and chopped nuts with the breadcrumbs, sugar and spices, if using. Mix in the melted butter until well coated, then spoon over the fruit. Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, until crunchy and golden. Serve hot with warmed custard.
